May is National CF Awareness Month

Wednesday, March 16th, 2005

On April 8, 2004 the U.S. Senate passed a resolution declaring the month of May as National Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month. Thanks to the efforts of Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell of Colorado, who sponsored the resolution along with 17 cosponsors, the national spotlight has, once again, been placed on CF and the importance of supporting CF research and care programs.National CF Awareness Month offered the opportunity for the hopes and concerns of people with CF, along with their families, friends, and caregivers to reach a national audience. The goal was to raise the profile of CF by creating a greater understanding among the general public. Although the Senate declared May 2004 as National CF Awareness Month, our efforts to educate and increase awareness beyond the CF community must continue throughout the year.

Made a 84% on my first math exam. I should have gotten a better grade but I made a mistake on that stupid SCANTRON I spoke about last time. Plus it was very easy math and I should have made a better grade period.

It has been pretty hard to balance everything. I guess everyone has those problems, but is so strange because I spent so much time with nothing to do. Its probably just shock. I’m getting the hang of it and I just need to schedule my time better.

Going home for Easter and I am so excited. It will only be for the weekend, but it will be worth it!

My health is just great, I need to get that all balanced out too. There have been a couple of days when I have forgotten my medication at 10am, but I ‘ve remembered early enough to cause no problems. One day in my gym class my sugars were real low and I had to sit down and have some candy…darn the luck No, it does get scarry when your sugars get low because you can’t think properly or exercise is out of the question. I know now to eat a little before my 4:30 gym class.

The last few days Scott has been sick with an upper-respitory infection. Well, we just found out that it is an actual infection and he is on anitbiotics now. But it is a little scarry to be in the house with him. We have been keeping our distance and there is no shortage of Lysol. I feel fine and I think he will be better in a few days. Let’s hope! It stinks when someone you care about is sick and there is nothing you can do to help them. I can’t imagine being my family or Scott when I was going through everything last year.

Food for thought. Would you rather be the sick one or the caretaker? Hmm, thats a hard one! In my case I say the sick one.

Take care

Week 4 of school…

Is going quite well. Yesterday I had my first math exam. I believe I did well, but I will find out for sure tomorrow. Those Scantrons drive my eyes wild. If you don’t know what a scantron let me explain. It has to be the stupidest way to give a test. There are thousands of little blank dots and you fill in the entire dot that answers the question. A,B,C,D. Seriously the dots drive you crazy. They are like those visual puzzles where you have to figure out what the pictures is but the picture is distorted.

My health continues to stay good. I think its good for my body to be busy everyday with something. Also my legs have a hard time keeping up with my lungs. Monday and Weds I have a PE class thats keeping me in shape.

Every month USC has a support meeting for all of the cardiothoracic patients, usually theres guest speaker. Well this month it was Dr. Robin Cohen, the surgeon that performed my surgery. I wanted to go really bad, but I though the meeting was March 7. I was wrong the meeting was on March 1st and I missed it. I’m disappointed because I really couldn’t pick him out of a line-up if I had to. Of course during the surgery I was “out”, but he came a few time after the surgery. I still wouldn’t be able to spot him. Hopefully he will speak again soon. And I won’t miss it! Next month the guest speaker is a Diabetic Panel. Oh boy do I have a lot of questions for them. Mainly how can I eat as much candy as possible but control my sugars.?

Better go.  I hope this diary entry finds you doing well.
